The Bethesda Naval Hospital, also known as the National Naval Medical Center (NNMC) in Bethesda, Maryland, United States, is considered one of the top military medical facilities in the world. Established in 1938, it acts as the flagship facility of the United States Navy's system of medical centers. The Bethesda Naval Hospital is a federal institution and provides health care for not only military personnel but also for American leaders including the United States President and his family. The NNMC has a vision to “be the Flagship of Force Health Protection and operational readiness; to deliver outstanding customer service; maintain outstanding opportunities in graduate medical and dental education and research; and always deliver world-class health care within an integrated system.”

The National Naval Medical Center is one of the nation’s largest and most renowned military medical centers and is well known for providing vital care to America’s war heroes and presidents over the past 65 years. There are over 4,500 professionals at the NNMC that make it their daily mission to serve and care for the patients at the hospital. The Bethesda Naval Hospital says it best by stating, “People come here to heal, to stay healthy, to help others, to teach the next generation, to practice quality medicine, and take part in cutting-edge clinical research.”

The future is also very bright for continued excellence and expansion at the Bethesda Naval Hospital. On August 25, 2005, the Base Realignment and Closure Committee recommended that the Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC) be closed, and that its operations be merged with the NNMC to create the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC), a modernized joint-forces central medical facility created by expanding the current Bethesda Naval Hospital. The new facility is to be operational by September 2011.
